A Wise Father
by Bruce Vyverberg
It is an undeniable truth that the Lord loves all of His children with an unconditional love which can never be either earned or lost. There is nothing better than knowing He loves us on both our "bad days" as well as our "good ones." With this said, being a wise and loving heavenly Father, He knows how to raise us as His children so that we grow up to live a life that increasingly reflects both His goodness and character.
To do this, the Lord often uses other people in our lives to teach, encourage, comfort and or exhort us when needed. Much to our chagrin, however, He also uses others at times to correct, warn or even rebuke us when it is necessary for both our own good and His glory. Happily, those used of the Lord to encourage, comfort and exhort others will be rewarded with gratefulness and warm favor by the receiver. Sadly, however, those called upon by the same Lord to periodically correct, warn, or even rebuke others will often be met with ice-cold resistance, resentment, anger and hard feelings which may last a lifetime.
Knowing this, while it is truly a thrill and honor to be called upon to do the former, God help the child of God ever called on to do the latter.
"Reprove, rebuke and exhort with all longsuffering and teaching" (2 Timothy 4:2).
